The objective of this book is to provide the concepts, procedures, data, and decision analysis techniques necessary to design machine elements commonly found in mechanical devices and systems. Students completing a course of study using this book should be able to execute original designs for machine elements and integrate the elements into a system composed of several elements.

This process requires a consideration of the performance requirements of an individual element and of the interfaces between elements as they work together to form a system. For example, a gear must be designed to transmit power at a given speed. The design must specify the number of teeth, pitch, tooth form, face width, pitch diameter, material, and method of heat treatment. But the gear design also affects, and is affected by, the mating gear, the shaft carrying the gear, and the environment in which it is to operate. Furthermore, the shaft must be supported by bearings, which must be contained in a housing. Thus, the designer should keep the complete system in mind while designing each individual element. This book will help the student approach design problems in this way.

This text is designed for those interested in practical mechanical design. The emphasis is on the use of readily available materials and processes and appropriate design approaches to achieve a safe, efficient design. It is assumed that the person using the book will be the designer, that is, the person responsible for determining the configuration of a machine or a part of a machine. Where practical, all design equations, data, and procedures needed to make design decisions are specified.

It is expected that students using this book will have a good background in statics, strength of materials, college algebra, and trigonometry. Helpful, but not required, would be knowledge of kinematics, industrial mechanisms, dynamics, materials, and manufacturing processes.

Lists of Internet sites pertinent to topics in this book are included at the end of most chapters to assist readers in accessing additional information or data about commercial products.

In addition to the emphasis on original design of machine elements, much of the discussion covers commercially available machine elements and devices, since many design projects require an optimum combination of new, uniquely designed parts and purchased components.

For some topics the focus is on aiding the designer in selecting commercially available components, such as rolling contact bearings, flexible couplings, ball screws, electric motors, belt drives, chain drives, clutches, and brakes.

Computations and problem solutions use both the International System of Units (SI) and the U.S. Customary System (inch-pound-second) approximately equally. The basic reference for the usage of SI units is IEEE/ASTM-SI-10 Standard for Use of the International System of Units (SI): The Modern Metric System, which has replaced ASTM E380 and ANSI/IEEE Standard 268-1992.

MDESIGN–MECHANICAL DESIGN SOFTWARE INCLUDED IN THE BOOK

The design of machine elements inherently involves extensive procedures, complex calculations, and many design decisions. Data must be found from numerous charts and tables. Furthermore, design is typically iterative, requiring the designer to try several options for any given element, leading to the repetition of design calculations with new data or new design decisions. This is especially true for complete mechanical devices containing several components as the interfaces between components are considered. Use of computer aided mechanical design software can facilitate the design process by performing many of the tasks while leaving the major design decisions to the creativity and judgment of the designer or engineer.

Swami Lakshmanjoo was the last in an unbroken line of Kashmir Shaiva masters. As a boy his life was filled with a spiritual thirst to know and realize God. From a very early age he was filled with spiritual experiences. In fact these experiences were so intense that his parents thought he was suffering from hysteria. They were very concerned and approached their family guru, Swamiji’s grand master Swami Ram, requesting him to help their son with his hysteria. Swami Ram laughed and said to them, “Don’t worry, I should have such a disorder.” As Swamiji grew older his desire to completely realize and apprehend the world of spirituality became paramount. To make this a reality he sat at the feet of his guru Swami Mahatabakak and took up the study and practice of Kashmir Shaivism. He became completely engrossed and enthralled in his spirituality, wholeheartedly practicing day and night, ultimately experiencing the fullness of Kashmir Shaiva realization. It is to his beloved Kashmir Shaivism that he devoted the whole of his life, teaching it to those who asked and translating and commenting on what he considered to be the most important texts of this system. He became renowned as a philosopher saint steeped in the tradition of Kashmir Shaivism. With the growing interest in Kashmir Shaivism over the last thirty years, hardly any publication has appeared without a mention of Swami Lakshmanjoo’s contribution to this unique philosophy.

Review is by my sister in law, who I bought this for. She says it's interesting about how the season progressed and her struggle with coming to terms with alzheimer's, trying to remember things. It is a little slow, she put it down and hasn't finished it yet. But part of it is that as she is reading it she stops and thinks of her mom when she reads it, and that's hard too.

Pat was amazing even while dealing with her illness. This book brings to light just how well she handled herself when the spotlight was on her when it wasn't about basketball. Very well written and I will treasure knowing she was classy to the very end.

Thought it would be a book I couldn't put down as the other ones I have read about her were. It was OK. Started out at a good pace, seemed to get bogged down with stats of games and such. Am 3/4 through and just can't get motivated to finish it. Miss her input. That's what's missing in this book. Just OK. I wouldn't run out to buy it new. Wait for a used one to come about. You aren't missing anything by rushing out to pay full price. Only redeeming quality is a % of the price when to her Alzheimer's. Foundation.

I bought this one because I loved all of the other books about Coach Summit. Like others, I felt bogged down once I got into it. The play by play and jumping around was just weird. Buy it for the donation.
